Hair Toning
Correction before colour.
Most men who think they need new colour need correction. Toning is the quiet hand that decides
whether everything above it succeeds or quietly fails.
The Method
Most men who think they need new colour need correction.
Toning is the quiet work. It is not a colour service in the way the client understands colour. It is the discipline of removing what should not be there: the brass, the yellow, the warmth left behind by a previous service, the sun, or time.
What looks like a finished colour is often a colour with the wrong undertone. The eye reads it as off without being able to say why. Toning is the corrective layer that lets the underlying work sit correctly on the head. It is unseen when it is done well, and obvious when it is missed.
The difference between toning and re-colouring is structural. One rebuilds. The other refines. Knowing which the hair needs is my job, not the client’s.
